Re-purposed Oak Table from Futon

It's a good day on the Vanster when you come home with a free oak table.

Following a curbside pick-up in Bay View last month we came across an oak futon. The pillow top portion of the futon was dicarded, but the rich yellow and brown textured oak frame was saved. Despite light water damage and some warped slats, much of the oak was useful. We separated the warped waste wood from the clean oak wood.  There was enough salvageable material to make a modest table top. So we did.

We took some hasty measurements, sawed and lightly sanded the reusable slats, and the table top was complete. But now we were left without any legs for our beautiful reconstructed find. Not to worry. I happened to have some 4" posts in my trusty storage.

Not any old posts, oak posts. The oak posts came from a previous removal, also in Bay View. The posts were in good shape  The wood tones matched perfectly. All we had to do was fasten about 18  screws and we had ourselves our first repurposed oak table. A fun and sustainable project indeed.
