First Coffee Cup Recycling Plant Opens

The first coffee cup recycling plant has opened in the U.K. According to resource.uk the £5 million plant utilizes ‘the world’s first’ technology that can separate out the polyethylene content of disposable coffee cups (5 per cent) from the paper pulp (95 per cent), which is then reportedly recycled into high-quality papers. The plastic coating recovered from this process is also recyclable.

According to James Cropper, the recycling process involves softening the cups in a warm solution and separating the plastic coating from the fiber, The plastic is skimmed off, pulverized and recycled, leaving water and pulp. Impurities are filtered out, leaving high-grade pulp suitable for use in luxury papers and packaging materials, the company says.

Coffee cup recycling programs are being piloted in the U.S. Green Bay's Georgia Pacific has been actively working with Starbucks to shore up local supply chains and increase consumer engagement.   Good news for Wisconsin bin manufacturers and paper recycling facilities.
